Every day thousands of dogs are ‘put to sleep’, which is a kind way to saying that they are euthanized. Many of these are simply unwanted animals that have been abandoned by their owners. They are not sick. They are not unadoptable or aggressive. They have simply been pushed into the ‘unwanted’ garbage bin.
Here is the story of ‘Red’, a lovely Chow dog that was hanging onto its life by a thread. Red was an unwanted dog that some careless owner had abandoned. Red ended up as a stray and was finally picked up by the SPCA in North Carolina. He was somewhat thin, but really a wonderful dog that would thrive in a loving home. Since shelters only have so much room and resources, dogs brought to them can only be with them for so long. After the required time period is up and the dog is not adopted, then the animal is euthanized. Red was in that situation. His time was literally ‘up’. He only had hours to live.
Red was lucky though. Volunteers and animal lovers came together to try to find Red a second chance for life. What volunteers did when they found out Red’s situation was to post Red’s picture and information on blogs and websites. Finally a dog rescue in Texas responded to one of the notices. Red was dragged from the death table with moments to spare. He was saved from being gassed (which they do in North Carolina—instead of the more humane needle euthanasia method).
The above is a true story and Red was given his second chance for life. Through the Texas dog rescue and the efforts of many volunteers, Red now has a chance for a great home and a long life with a loving family.
Here is another story of poor unwanted Chiquita, a little long-haired Chihuahua. Chiquita was only about a year old when her owners no longer wanted her. She was also on death-row. Again, volunteers came to her rescue as they posted her picture (Chiquita completely and lovingly cute in a little pink dress) on the web. Their efforts saved Chiquita from death as well, and she has now been placed with a family that will appreciate what her little soul is worth.
Red and Chiquita were both lucky, but many other dogs are not. It takes a lot of effort, time, commitment and caring on the part of many volunteers to save these poor unwanted dogs.
What can you do to help?
Volunteers are needed to accept lists of animals about to be euthanized, and who can then cross-post the details to various dog rescues that may be able to take these animals in. You can contact animalcareservices@greenvillecounty.org (email address) to get up-dated lists. You can post the list to blogs or your own websites to gain as much exposure to the animal’s situation as possible. Volunteers are also need to help transport the animals from one place to another. You don’t have to take them through the whole route if the dog is being placed in a faraway location—simply a leg of the route, say from one city to another. Of course, money is always helpful. Contact dog rescues in your area to find out what is needed.
If you are a dog lover and can’t sleep nights wondering about what will happen to these poor unwanted dogs, maybe you can help too. Think of Red and Chiquita and how volunteers willing to put in a little effort to save a dog helped saved their lives. Maybe that can be you.

True Dog Lovers Are Happy To Go Anywhere to Find True Love
According to the results of a poll carried out by the leading dog lovers dating site www.doglover.biz 72.73% of its members who voted would travel to the ends of the earth to find love. Of the remainder 9.09% would travel anywhere within their own country, 9.09% within their own state and 9.09% would stick to their home town.
Derek Collinson, who founded www.doglover.biz 4 years ago, believes that this shows that his dog lover members are very romantic. He also believes that www.doglover.biz is a better choice for dog lovers seeking soul mates than one of the big mainstream online dating sites.
He added “Ok I know that the big mainstream dating sites have a million members or more and we have thousands but it doesn’t follow that a dog lover will stand a better chance of finding a dog loving soul mate on one of the big dating sites.
Trying to find a dog lover, especially a male dog lover, on one of the big dating sites can be very difficult. It’s hard enough finding a woman who mentions she loves dogs on one of those sites. And many men are reluctant to admit they love dogs because they think this admission makes them appear effeminate.
Since the majority of true dog lovers will not date someone who isn’t a dog lover then really they stand a much better chance of finding a dog loving soul mate on our dating site since all our members are dog lovers.
True, they may not find their dog lover soul mate in their own home town, but since our poll shows that the vast majority will travel to the ends of the earth to find love then really that doesn’t matter.
In any case there is an excellent chance they will find someone in their own country and a good chance of finding someone in their own state.”
Usually the process involved in getting to know someone on www.doglover.biz is firstly a flirt to let someone know they are interested in them. This takes the form of a short standard message designed to break the ice and find out if their feelings are reciprocated. Members can choose the message they like ranging from the romantic to the humorous. If the recipient responds positively then emails are exchanged and after that usually telephone conversations take place.
Online dating is a great way to get to know someone because each party can control the pace and decide when the time is right to make telephone contact and finally arrange the first meeting – usually a coffee somewhere.
If the distances are great – for example the two people live in different countries then the process may be different. Longer telephone conversations usually take place and it is possible to get to know someone very well in this way so that when it comes to arranging the first meeting there will be a good chance of success.
Nowadays this needn’t cost the earth and in fact by using Skype on mobile phones or computers this is likely to be free.
In addition Webcams can give a great insight into what the real person sounds and looks like so if there is a strong attraction using this medium then it’s likely there will be a strong attraction face to face in the real world too!
Karen Sunde, the respected American playwright and screenwriter said “to love is to receive a glimpse of heaven” and perhaps that’s why, more than anything else, our members are prepared to travel to the ends of the earth to find it!
Derek founded the leading dating site for dog lovers www.doglover.biz in June 2006, inspired by his lifelong love of dogs and the need for dog lovers to share their passion with others like them.
If you’re a dog lover looking for a soul mate the answer is probably an emphatic ‘Yes’. Beverley Cuddy, Editor of Dogs Today Magazine explains her thoughts when she was on the dating scene and why she likes the idea of one online dating site in particular that’s exclusively for dog lovers – www.doglover.biz. ‘When I was dating I always scanned profiles for mentions of dogs as it was obviously pointless to spend any time on someone who was going to be continually picking dog hairs off their suit! A mention of a dog seemed to make the men more human and trustworthy somehow! A website where a love of dogs is entry level standard would cut out so much of the dross! I particularly liked the idea you could search for people who specifically liked the same breeds as you.’ www.doglover.biz is the leading dog lovers dating site and was founded three years ago by Derek Collinson, It has been featured on BBC TV and many other TV and Radio stations as well as national and regional newspapers and magazines worldwide. Already thousands of dog lovers have joined who prefer dog lovers dating to the big mainstream dating sites and continue to join in ever increasing numbers. Ironically it was the premature death of Derek’s first dog, Monty that lead to him founding the website. Derek says ‘1 came to realise the depth of my feelings for dogs when my pet labrador Monty tragically died at just four years old. His loss hit me hard and showed me just how much I loved dogs. It made me appreciate the importance of sharing your life with another dog lover – someone who could understand exactly what it felt like to love and to lose a dog. And so www.doglover.biz was born with a mission to introduce dog lovers from all over the world looking to share their lives with other dog lovers. www.doglover.biz has proved to be very popular with single dog owners in the States – hardly surprising given there are an estimated 43 million there. In addition many dog lovers from the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland have joined plus English speaking dog lovers from all over the world. Currently www.doglover.biz is offering a 7 Day Free Trial – so for dog lovers who think that their fellow dog lovers are more trustworthy there’s never been a better time to join.
Born and brought up in Scotland but now living in the Yorkshire Wolds. I share my life with Findlay (an Italian Spinone) and two rescue dogs from Limerick Animal Welfare in Ireland – Florence (English Pointer) and Serena (a cross Black Labrador and Cocker Spaniel). Four years ago I lost my much loved first ever dog – a Black Labrador called Monty. It was his passing at just four years old that made me realise how much I loved him and all animals. As a result I started a dating site for dog lovers called www.doglover.biz so that single dog lovers could meet other like minded souls.
Heres my dog Chrono. He likes to play a lot. He is 16 years old in human years and can still run around and play as if he were a young pup. Video Rating: 5 / 5
Newfoundland Dogs – How To Breed Newfoundland Dogs!
All animal lovers find dogs that borrow their names from the Newfoundland island extremely appealing. There are two varieties of these- the white and black and the black. Though the Newfoundland black variety is essentially black, there may are other colors too, like white marks. As a matter of fact, a true breed is expected to have a mark on the chest of white color. Any other white on the body or head would make the dog the other than black type. It is preferred that the black color is a dull jet type that almost resembles brown. The class of the other than black includes bronze, white and black, and black and tan. The white and black predominates and the beauty of the marking is of importance in this color. It is preferred for the legs and body to be white along with large black patches on the quarters and saddle, while the head is black in color with white blaze and muzzle. Other small spots of black may be present on the legs and body.
Besides colour, all the other varieties have to conform to the same standards. He head should not look heavy in appearance but should be massive and broad. Other specifications are that the eyes should be wide apart, dark, deep set and small without any haw; the muzzle- short, clean cut and square, the ears should be small, have close side carriages and should be covered with short hair without any fringe to the ears. Also the dog should convey dignity, kindness and intelligence through its expressions.
The dogs body should be square, massive and long, while the loins should be well filled and strong, broad and chest deep, straight legs, having a slightly shorter proportion compared to the body’s length. The legs should also be powerful and have round bone which are covered by good muscle, while the feet should be round, close and large. The tail should not reach below the hocks and should accordingly lengthy. They should not curl up over the back and should be free from kink. The quality of the coat is of prime importance. It should be quite dense and should have plenty of undercoat, where the overcoat is quite straight and somewhat harsh.
The dogs appearance should indicate an animal of great power and strength which is very active for its size and build, and should have a roll in its gait, freely moving with its body swung between its legs. Newfoundland club standards state the dog should weigh between 120 lbs and 140 lbs while the bitch should be between 110 lbs and 120 lbs, with a height averaging 27 and 25 inches respectively at the shoulders.
Soft food like milk and well boiled rice should be given while rearing the puppies and as soon as they lap, diet should be switched to scraped lean meat. The Newfoundland puppies need plenty of meat. The normal growth rate of weight is 3lbs/week and for this both cooked and raw flesh, meat and muscle-forming food. While providing milk, casein needs to be added to it to strengthen it. For breeding a full sized dog with plenty of substance and bone it is important to get a good start from its birth with good feeding, dry warm quarters and the freedom for puppies to exercise and move about as they wish. Medicine should not be administered except for worms, the puppies being checked for these as soon as they are weaned, and also again when they are three to four months old. It is easy to rear Newfoundland puppies if they are given proper food, quarters and exercise and are kept free from worms.

Is Fido acting sad rather than happy and excited, even after arriving at your vacation destination? Maybe he’s really homesick!
His humans packed familiar, favorite things for their vacation fun, but did they give any thought to what their family pet wants and needs for a good time, too?
This suggested packing list for Fido is just the ticket.
1. Bedding such as towels or blankets for the car or crate that Fido has curled up on for a few days – Familiar smells are comforting.
2. Favorite food and water bowls – This will encourage a normal eating routine. Just as people often have problems with a foreign diet, the same thing can happen to your pet. This isn’t the time to try the free sample from the pet store.
3. A few bottles of water from your home faucet – This makes the transition to a new taste more gradual and acceptable.
4. Toys that Fido plays with most – But, it’s okay to introduce your canine companion to a new sport, like chasing a frisbee on the beach.
5. A doggie life jacket – If you’re going to be around water, even in a boat, this one item could literally be a life saver.
6. A travel bed or crate mat – This may be easier to transport and may fit in your vehicle better than your dog’s regular bed. Have Fido nap on this rather than his regular bed for several days before the trip, and don’t forget to put a favorite blanket or towel on top that is packed in your vehicle along with the choice of travel bed.
Travel Safety Tips for Fido:
When making a stop, always put a leash or harness on Fido before you open the car door. Strange surroundings and sounds could cause him to panic and possibly run away – or worse run into traffic.
Dogs love to hang their head out of a car window. Wonder why they do this? Maybe they like the breeze blowing through their fur or just enjoy the scenery. Bottom line – this can be hazardous to your dog’s health. Bugs and other road debris can cause eye damage. There are special glasses and goggles for dogs that can help prevent this, assuming Fido is willing to take on the life of a movie star. There’s also the possibility that Fido will see a cute doggie or other attraction that will cause him to jump from a moving vehicle.
There are pet seats with harnesses available that not only secure your best friend, but elevate him so he can easily see out of the window. This may help diminish the urge to have his head hanging out the window and can help if Fido tends to get car sick. It’s a toss up whether to have the barf inside the car or covering the outside with an undesirable new paint job. Not feeding Fido before the trip and giving him ice chips rather than water can help to calm that queasy feeling.
Dramamine can help, but be sure to check with your Vet for the proper dosage for your dog. They may recommend something that would be more effective.
No matter what the outside temperature is, never leave your pet in the car – or your kids either. Plan stops where Fido will be a welcome visitor.
Don’t put Fido in the back of a pick up truck. He’s subject to the elements, and it’s even easier for him to make a break for it or be injured in a fall.
Many more hotels and vacation locations, such as campgrounds and rental houses, are now accepting pets. Be sure to check with them well ahead of time with regard to deposits and damage fees. Also, be sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date and be sure to take proof with you.
If traveling by air, the best airlines generally have written rules for pet travel. These guidelines are evidence that the airline has given a good deal of thought to the safe transport of animals. Small pets often can be crated and taken on board the plane with you. Larger animals must stay in the cargo area. No matter what airline carrier you use, there are important guidelines to consider.
Try to book a non-stop flight and take temperatures into consideration. During the summer, fly at night when it’s often cooler. In the winter, fly during the day when it’s warmer. Certain short-nosed dogs, such as pugs, cannot breathe well in airplane cargo areas, so avoid flying with these particular breeds.
Sometimes you just have to use common sense to make sure Fido arrives at his vacation spot as relaxed and ready to play as you are.
Fido will thank you for taking him on vacation with you as opposed to boarding him at a kennel. You’ll feel better, too, knowing that he’s in your loving care.
Plus, he’ll be so excited to have all of the items on his very own packing list!
The dogs which take their name from the island of Newfoundland appeal to all lovers of animals. There are now two established varieties, the black and the white and black. There are also bronze-coloured dogs, but they are rare.
The black variety of the Newfoundland is essentially black in colour, but this does not mean that there may be no other colour, for most black Newfoundlands have some white marks. In fact, a white marking on the chest is said to be typical of the true breed. Any white on the head or body would place the dog in the other than black variety. The black colour should preferably be of a dull jet appearance which approximates to brown.
In the other than black class, there may be black and tan, bronze, and white and black. The latter predominates, and in this colour, beauty of marking is very important. The head should be black with a white muzzle and blaze, and the body and legs should be white with large patches of black on the saddle and quarters, with possibly other small black spots on the body and legs.
Apart from colour, the varieties should conform to the same standard. The head should be broad and massive, but in no sense heavy in appearance. The muzzle should be short, square, and clean cut, eyes rather wide apart, deep set, dark and small, not showing any haw; ears small, with close side carriage, covered with fine short hair (there should be no fringe to the ears), expression full of intelligence, dignity, and kindness.
The body should be long, square, and massive, loins strong and well filled; chest deep and broad; legs quite straight, somewhat short in proportion to the length of the body, and powerful, with round bone well covered with muscle; feet large, round, and close. The tail should be only long enough to reach just below the hocks, free from kink, and never curled over the back. The quality of the coat is very important; the coat should be very dense, with plenty of undercoat; the outer coat somewhat harsh and quite straight.
The appearance generally should indicate a dog of great strength, and very active for his build and size, moving freely with the body swung loosely between the legs, which gives a slight roll in gait. As regards size, the Newfoundland Club standard gives 140 lbs. to 120 lbs. weight for a dog, and 110 lbs. to 120 lbs. for a bitch, with an average height at the shoulder of 27 inches and 25 inches respectively’ but it is doubtful whether dogs in proper condition do conform to both requirements.
When rearing puppies give them soft food, such as well-boiled rice and milk, as soon as they will lap, and, shortly afterwards, scraped lean meat. Newfoundland puppies require plenty of meat to induce proper growth. The puppies should increase in weight at the rate of 3 lbs. a week, and this necessitates plenty of flesh, bone and muscle-forming food, plenty of meat, both raw and cooked. Milk is also good, but it requires to be strengthened with casein.
The secret of growing full-sized dogs with plenty of bone and substance is to get a good start from birth, good feeding, warm, dry quarters, and freedom for the puppies to move about and exercise themselves as they wish. Forced exercise may make them go wrong on their legs. Medicine should not be required except for worms, and the puppies should be physicked for these soon after they are weaned, and again when three or four months old, or before that if they are not thriving.
If free from worms, Newfoundland puppies will be found quite hardy, and, under proper conditions of food and quarters, they are easy to rear.

American Rawhide Dog Chews Are Safer Than Imported Rawhide Chews
Have You Ever Wondered Exactly What Rawhide Dog Chews Are And Where They Come From? Why Does Your Dog Enjoy Them So Much? We’ll Try And Answer These Questions Any Many More.
Many people never really think about what there feeding their dog when they give them a rawhide dog chew. Since the majority of us are overworked and there still doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day, we just want to keep our best friend happy like the rest of the family.
What Are Rawhide Chews?
Rawhide is exactly that, a hide. Generally dog chews are made from cattle and buffalo hide. Dogs like their ancestors like and need to chew. The chewing of hide supposedly satisfies their need to hunt. While rawhide dog chews are debatable with many dog lovers, others seem to stockpile them for Fido.
Many large retailers are purchasing rawhide chews from outside of the United States. Recently a large supermarket chain right here in my own community in Pittsburgh, started purchasing all of their rawhide from China. Why, because their profit margin is much higher purchasing it from outside the U.S.
Unfortunately, it’s all about the bottom line with no consideration to your dog’s safety. It’s no secret to anyone that items made right here in the United States cost more. But, is that a bad thing? After all, people should make a decent wage and American citizens deserve to know that their pet’s safety comes first.
Chance vs Cost…
Keep in mind that the laws and regulations governing other countries are not the same as they are here in the United States and this is especially true when it comes to animals. Although the “curing” process for hide here in the U.S. is controversial due to the chemicals used, the curing process for hide in other countries has very little quality control.
From what I understand, many dogs have gotten sick with “acute pancreatitis” after eating rawhide from these other countries. Salmonella bacteria is quite often present on international rawhide dog chews. These countries use arsenic and other insecticides in their curing process. It’s also not uncommon to find skin and hair from dogs and cats in their finished products. So the bottom line is, if you’re going to feed your dog rawhide, buy American rawhide dog chews only!
Do you have your own story about rawhide dog chews that you want others to know about? Maybe not a story, but an opinion. Whether it’s funny or serious, we would love to hear it. If you write it, we will post it on our website. Please see the following link.

Safeguard Your Dog With Value Low Cost Dog Insurance Cover Online
They say the dog is mans best friend and for millions of pet owners this is true and if your beloved dog were to suffer an accident or needed treated at the vets it could run into hundreds of pounds.
While of course you would not hesitate when it came to getting your dog treatment, you can make life quicker by taking out dog insurance which can offset some of the veterinary costs involved.
Recently, Sainsbury’s has advised pet cover customers to assess whether the duration of their pet insurance cover product matches their needs. According to the pet insurance cover provider, many such deals are only valid for short periods of time, possibly leaving owners without an adequate policy after 12 months.
Their research found that 37% of dog insurance deals and 35 per cent of cat cover policies did not provide cover for health conditions lasting longer than a year.
The report pointed out that as 30 per cent of claims may last longer than one year, a sizable proportion of pet owners could be facing financial difficulty if their insurance cover product is unsuitable
According to the RSPCA, just 17 per cent of dogs and 11 per cent of cats are covered with pet cover – so a large proportion of animal lovers could find themselves out of pocket in the event of an accident of illness.
”Even basic health checks and things like that – they all cost money,” the spokesperson said. “We think it’s really imperative that people do take out cover.”
While dog insurance would cover any treated for illness and accident it also covers a lot more, for instance if your dog were to be the cause of an accident, for instance if a car swerved to avoid hitting your dog and the car was damaged the cover would product the cost of repairs. Dog insurance cover would also provide any legal costs and liability for damage caused by your pet dog.
What is actually covered in the cover can vary and so it is necessary to not only research online for the cheapest premiums for the insurance cover but also for the best possible deal. Using a specialist website will allow you to get several different quotes from some of the top UK Insurers and all quotes should come with the key facts of the cover attached.
There are many extras which you should look out for that can be included in an insurance product and some of the best quotes for dog cover will payout for such things as boarding fees, rewards to get your pet back if they are lost or stolen and some policies can even payout a death benefit.
When looking for dog insurance the quickest way to get access to the marketplace and so find low cost deal is to go online with a specialist website. A specialist website will be able to find you some of the most competitive quotes which you can then look over at your leisure and they should include the key facts.
